Trouble is book number 3 in the Dogwood Lane series. I did not read this book, I had listened to it through Audible. My only complaints about that were that I could hear when the women was drinking water every single time she did, and the voice they used for Penn sounded like it was more meant for an older man. The book however was really adorable. It went in a different direction that I thought it would after finishing up Tangle. I am so happy that it through a curve ball and Penn did not end up with Grace and grace was not mentioned in the book. We knew Penn Etling from the other two books in this series and Avery was a new character. What we didn't know was that Avery had been to Dogwood lane about 10 year prior and she and Penn have a history together, Penn just doesn’t remember her. Penn has never been in a relationship, never had a girlfriend, and never has had anything beyond a good time with women, which is exactly the opposite of what Avery is looking for so they settle on being friends. Avery has always been around people who wanted to use her to get ahead in life because of her parents, and she came to Dogwood lane to escape that life and find people who want to be around her for who she is as a person. Her aunt Harper had taken her in and is wanting nothing but for Avery to be happy. Watching Penn open up to Avery and try to be what she needs, noticing the little things that reminded him of her, and getting a glimpse of why he’s never thought he was enough for anyone was so touching. Avery was so quick with comebacks to Penn's advances and it was funny watching their back and forth. Matt and Penns friendship I think was my favorite part of the book. They were more like brothers than anything else, they were funny most of the time, however when needed Matt had no issue putting Penn into place when it came to Penns happiness. I really really loved this book. And I REALLY REALLY hope Matt and Claire get a book as well. I would not recommend reading this book without reading the first two books though, it can be read as a standalone but I don’t think it would be as enjoyable without reading the first two first.
“Being with you makes me feel like I’m seen … You don’t look at me and see the goofy guy that everyone knows I am.” He looks up at me with a hesitation that stops my breath. “You see the guy I think my grandpa told me I could be.”
